The Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern have been reacting to their on-loan ‘keeper Mats Sels’ comments about Congolese defender, Chancel Mbemba. A story in SportFoot (via The Chronicle) claims that Sels has questioned why the defender is getting so little game time, claiming that he’s one of the best defenders at the club.

Chancel Mbemba joined the club from Anderlecht, who Sels is now on-loan with, back in summer 2015 at the age of just 20, although he’s failed to kick on in his Newcastle career and has managed just nine Premier League appearances for the Magpies. In the defender’s debut season he managed 33 appearances for the club as they were relegated to the Championship. However, Mbemba fell out of favour as Rafa Benitez opted to use Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark at the heart of Newcastle’s defence, limiting the 23-year-old to only 12 league games last year.
Sels’ comments on Mbemba come at a time where the 26-year-old shot-stopper should be worrying about his own future. He was signed by Benitez in January 2016, just over two years ago, to rival Karl Darlow in between the sticks. Rafa’s plan failed though as neither ‘keeper could nail down the spot. Now though, the goalkeeping situation at St James Park is more clear, Martin Dubravka joined the club from Sparta Prague on-loan in January and will be looking to make his move permanent as he’s impressed both the fans and, more importantly, Rafa Benitez.
You can read the resident Toon’s verdict on Sels’ comments here:
Rafa knows best. There are 3 players ahead of him. I havent seen #nufc ever be as solid at the back as they are now and i'm 42.

… because he's not as good as those starting ahead of him? Funny old game, football

I almost forgot that we had mbemba.

Probably the same reason he doesn't get games, we have better players for the position.

Could it be that Lascelles, Clark and Lejeune are all better than him?#JustAThought

So your reporting what a player that we have got rid of is saying about a player we will be getting rid of, slow day?
