Qatari side Al-Arabi have identified Chelsea’s Nicolas Anelka as the marquee signing the club needs ahead of their season getting underway next week. Al-Arabi who finished fourth last year are offering to double Anelka’s wages by offering a contract worth £8.4million a year.
Chelsea are overloaded with strikers at the moment. With Daniel Sturridge and Romelu Lukaku providing adequate cover for regulars Torres, Drogba and Anelka, it appears that new boss Andre Villas-Boas will have to regularly rotate his strikers to keep everyone happy.
Despite this, Anelka can fully expect to be an important player for Chelsea this season. For all the debate about whether or not Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba can play together, there is little doubt that both can play alongside Anelka.
Though aged 32 now, Anelka will take seriously the offer on one last lucrative contract, and never having shown anything in the way of loyalty throughout his career, the Frenchman would be set to make like Eto’o and Gyan and run for the money.
Chelsea are unlikely to renew Anelka’s contract when it expires in 12 months’ time having invested so heavily in new strikers this year, so may jump at the chance of removing the former PSG striker from the wage bill.
