Academy president reveals Arsenal had the chance to sign Sadio Mane in 2012

It is always difficult to predict how a player will turn out when they are older, however, it would appear Arsenal just have rotten luck when it comes down to how good they eventually become.

There is a running story that Arsene Wenger has had the opportunity to bring a number of talented footballers to the club in the past who eventually turned out into world-class footballers, with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Paul Pogba just some of the names rumoured.

And, now it appears he also had the chance to bring a current Premier League star to the Emirates Stadium back in 2012.

What’s the News?

According to an article by TeleDakar, Sadio Mane was offered to Arsenal following the London Olympic Games in the summer of 2012.

The £76.5million-rated (Transfermarkt) ace’s former academy’s president, Mady Toure, revealed that he had contacted Gilles Grimandi about a possible move, however, the former player and scout in charge of French recruitment decided against acting on the idea.

“After the 2012 Olympic Games, I had offered him to Gilles Grimandi,” he said, before adding: “A few years later, I recalled this episode to Arsene Wenger then coach of Arsenal.”

The Verdict:

Hearing about another superstar that the club and Wenger missed out on in the past really won’t be welcomed by Arsenal, especially considering how good Mane has turned out in the Premier League.

As mentioned, it is always difficult to predict just how well a player will turn out, and as Sport Witness mention, his stats during his time at Metz would not have filled many with excitement or expectation.

However, the Senegal international has gone on to defy any thoughts that many would have had about him since being in England, as he appeared to take to life in the top-flight like a duck to water with his spells at Southampton and Liverpool.

Currently helping his side in the title race and looking to make it back-to-back Champions League finals, the 26-year-old has become one of World Football’s best players and has attracted interest from the likes of Real Madrid recently.

If he had arrived at the Emirates Stadium and turned out to be the player he is today, who knows what he could have helped Arsenal to achieve? Maybe a Premier League title or two.

Arsenal fans, what do you make of the news that Grimaldi failed to act on the suggestion to bring Mane to the club? Are you even surprised to hear that the club missed out on another superstar? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
