Adam to Everton? Thanks But Very Definitely, No thanks

Out of favour Liverpool player Charlie Adam could be in line for a shock move to Merseyside rivals Everton. Toffees boss David Moyes is believed to be interested in the midfielder who is available for a cut price £5 million.

Adam, who is represented by Moyes’ brother Kenny, could become the first player in 20 years to swap Liverpool for Everton if the deal goes ahead.

The sale of Jack Rodwell has unsurprisingly seen the Blues linked with a number of players. It remains to be seen which of these rumours are genuine but of them all the Liverpool midfielder is not only the most shocking but also the least attractive option.

Everton need to invest the Rodwell money shrewdly and Adam is a waste of that money. For £5 million Moyes will want a player who commands a starting place and the former Blackpool player would struggle to do so.

Until the recent sales of Tim Cahill and Rodwell there was an significant amount of competition in the Everton midfield. Despite their transfers it is still an area where the Blues are strong.

Marouane Fellaini, Darron Gibson and Leon Osman impressed last season, particularly as a trio in a 4-5-1 formation and if you were to ask most Everton fans they would choose all three over Adam.Set pieces aside and bare in mind the Blues have Leighton Baines, he does not offer anything that would improve the current system

With a penchant for spectacular efforts Gibson is perhaps the most similar to Adam. But the Irishman is more mobile, better defensively and while he does not hit outrageous 60 yard passes at every opportunity, he does use the ball more intelligently. While  Osman’s creativity and the work rate and goal threat of Fellaini far outweigh anything the Scot could add.

Then there is Ross Barkley. The youngster is expected to begin to fulfil his obvious potential and Adam would frustratingly block his route to the first team.

Everton are expected to adopt a 4-2-3-1 formation this season. As it stands Osman and Barkley may be forced to support Steven Pienaar, Steven Naismith in the trio behind Nikica Jealvic. However, should Kevin Mirallas sign he would an attacking role, leaving the aforementioned central midfielders competing for two spots, not to mention Phil Neville and Johnny Heitinga should there be injuries.

It would not be a surprise if Mirallas was the only player to come in as a consequence of the Rodwell sale. But should more money be made available, Moyes’ pursuit of the likes of Adam Johnson and Matt Philips would be far more beneficial to the club than Charlie Adam.
