The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern have been toasting to Harry Winks over the last few days…
After impressing for Tottenham this season, the Englishman has earned his first call-up to his national team, with Gareth Southgate calling on the youngster for England after losing a few players to injury.
It’s no less than he deserves, with Mauricio Pochettino beginning to finally embed him within the Tottenham first team on a regular basis. He’s made 26 Premier League appearances thus far, mostly from the bench.
Offering fantastic passing from deep and forcing play forward with his incredible technical ability, Winks is really coming of age at present, and Pochettino deserves a lot of praise for his handling of the midfielder.
His national team call-up is the latest in a long line of success’ for the Englishman, but is now the time for him to really make that step into the Tottenham first team? He’s featured regularly this term, but that’s largely due to injuries, and so it’s expected that he will lose his place once again in the future. However, given how well he has performed, there are a few fans in the Transfer Tavern calling for his retention in the team.
It would certainly be a big show of faith from Pochettino, but it’s tough to argue with the logic. Particularly if he impresses for his country, Pochettino will have to think long and hard about how he plans to use Winks.
Is it too early for him to become a week-in-week-out starter? It’s tough to say, but what do you think?
