After Lejeune injury Newcastle must bring in Championship defender

Newcastle’s summer transfer window has been an exercise in how to save every penny of the budget.

The Magpies have had to sell in order to buy this window and that approach has set the tone in which the club has gone about trying to bring in players.

Instead of splashing out on a £20 million striker or winger, Mike Ashley has instead brought in Kenedy on loan. Currently, the club’s biggest transfer this summer has been the £3.6 million deal for Martin Dubravka following his loan spell with the club.

The club also brought in Fabian Schar from Deportivo La Coruna but now need to dip into the transfer market for another defender following Florian Lejeune’s knee injury. According to The Sun, Newcastle are interested in signing Swansea defender Federico Fernandez but may be put off due to his £10 million valuation.

The Breakdown

Newcastle were already on the hunt for a defender but with Lejeune’s injury, Benitez desperately needs someone to replace the Frenchman. Lejeune had been Lascelles starting defensive partner but now it seems as though new signing, Fabian Schar will be forced into that role leaving only Ciaran Clark as the last designated centreback.

It looks as though a deal for Fernandez may be quite hard as the £10 million valuation for the Argentinian defender may be above Mike Ashley’s tight budget. Moreover, Swansea have rejected any potential loan deal.

With Lascelles attracting interest from other Premier League clubs, Newcastle need to be prepared and cannot be caught short.
