Three Premier League teams are rumoured to be looking at a move for Sporting Lisbon forward Ricky Van Wolfswinkel. Caughtoffside.com report that Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool are all monitoring the 22-year-old.
The Dutchman’s agent, Louis Laros, has publicly claimed that both are interested but douts a deal will be done, he told the Portuguese media: “Chelsea and Manchester United have watched Ricky, like other young footballers in Europe, but I do not expect a possible deal in the January
“Nobody has spoken to me directly and Sporting are not interested in a deal at the moment. However, in the world of football, it is impossible to say never about a sale.”
Liverpool were heavily linked with Van Wolfswinkel last summer but for whatever reason the deal did not go through.
Now it seems that United and Chelsea lead the chase for the £11m rated striker, along with his midfield team-mate, Elias.
The Dutchman, who has one international cap, only signed for Sporting Lisbon in the summer so it may take some persuasion to prise him away from his current home.
Van Wolfswinkel is a versatile player; predominately a striker, he can also play as an attacking midfielder and has scored nine goals in seven starts this season.
Even if Alex Ferguson continues to experiment with Wayne Rooney in midfield, he still has a wealth of youthful options upfront in the form of Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck.
Whereas Chelsea have Didier Drogba and Nicholas Anelka coming towards the end of their careers plus Fernando Torres failing to recapture the form that earned his £50m price tag.
Van Wolfswinkel alongside Daniel Sturridge could be just what Andre Villas-Boas needs as he looks to rebuild an aging Chelsea side in his own image.
