FC Porto’s out-of-favour wing-back, Jorge Fucile, is on Kenny Dalglish’s ‘wanted’ list but Chelsea could be about to scupper a move from the Liverpool boss by making their own ‘mega bid’ in the January transfer window, according to Portuguese tabloid, Record.
Damien Comolli’s endless search for the world’s best talent as Liverpool’s Director of Football has found it’s way to Portugal, this time in the form of FC Porto’s versatile full-back, Jorge Fucile. The 27 year-old Uruguayan has been frozen out of first-team action at the Estadio do Dragao under coach, Vitor Pereira, and now his agent has alerted potential interested parties by saying his client must leave.
Fucile’s agent, Pablo Tamaduz, told Record,
“As he is used to playing, it is now best to look for another club where he will play consistently. We are talking about one of the best wing-backs from the last World Cup.
“He is happy at Porto, but not even getting on the bench. If you’re only seeing games from the stands, then it’s best you leave.”
Liverpool aren’t the only Premiership side interested in signing Fucile – Chelsea are also reported to want the Uruguayan international. Blues boss, Andre Villas-Boas, who made the managerial switch from Porto to Stamford Bridge last summer, continues to be linked with his former players. AVB was also said to keen on Alvaro Pereira but the possible availability of Fucile seems to have changed his mind.
Both Premiership clubs are looking to add strength in depth to their squad’s in the January transfer window as they prepare to go head-to-head in a battle for Champions League qualification in the second-half of the season. Chelsea appear to be on the verge of adding to their squad by bolstering their defensive line when they expect to sign Gary Cahill from Bolton Wanderers within the next few days for £7m.
Fucile is comfortable on either wing, as well as in midfield. His versatility could be a great asset to either club and his strong, combative approach is very suited to the Premier League. Liverpool have adequate cover in the full-back position but the Uruguayan could add some vital international experience. Fellow countrymen, Luis Suarez and Sebastian Coates, who are already on Merseyside, could hold the key to Fucile making the switch from Porto.
Italian giants, Inter Milan are also tracking the out-of-favour wing-back but he favours a move to England. Porto would be reluctant to sell but have recently acquired the services of Brazilian right-back, Danilo, from Santos. Reports of potential offers in the region of £6m are expected to fall short of Porto’s valuation for Fucile, but Chelsea are said to be willing to activate a minimum fee release clause in the Uruguayan’s contract for £16.6m.
