The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern had forgotten that Marco van Ginkel was still playing for the club…
Having suffered a long-term injury early into his Chelsea career, the Dutchman has struggled to regain a foothold in the side in recent years, having been relegated to Chelsea’s loan army as of late.
Currently playing for PSV, the Dutchman’s career at Chelsea appeared over – given his lack of action at Stamford Bridge – but according to his agent, that is not the case.
Speaking to the Evening Standard, van Ginkel’s agent Karel Jansen said: “It is not clear what will happen, it is still early. The current season is still running so nothing has been decided”.
However, significantly, he said: “Chelsea renewed his contract before he went away on loan so in our opinion there is still a future at the club”.
Whilst Jansen is clearly unsure what the future holds, there does seem to be a hope from their end that he will be playing for Chelsea again next season.
Indeed, there is certainly space for him in the Chelsea midfield. Given that Conte isn’t exactly blessed with midfield depth, particularly with regards to the energic qualities that van Ginkel brings, it might make sense to give him a chance over the summer.
Offering dynamic running and combative play in the middle-of-the-park, van Ginkel is a raw but very talented midfielder.
