Agreement reportedly close in transfer blow for Liverpool – Report

Liverpool fans experienced a whirlwind start to the January transfer window, with Virgil van Dijk joining the Anfield side in a mega deal, before Philippe Coutinho left for Barcelona in a deal in the region of £150 million.

A replacement for the impressive Brazilian is high on the wishlist of Liverpool fans here in The Transfer Tavern, with the guys from the north west quick to share their thoughts on potential targets with our landlord over several pints here in The Tavern. Many names were mentioned, but reports emerging from Spanish publication AS have suggested that one target may become unattainable, with Athletic Bilbao winger Inaki Williams close to agreeing terms on a new deal with the Basque club.

It’s thought that, while Liverpool are keen on him, the young Spaniard is close to a new deal in the Basque country.

The 23-year-old has impressed for Los Leones this semester, and the club are keen to tie the player to improved terms with an increased buyout clause in his contract of around €70 million. Williams is reportedly keen to sign a new deal, having settled in an apartment in the city centre, with his brother also impressing in the youth set-up at the club.

Landlord’s Verdict: Williams seems to have been around for years now, having broken into the first-team at Bilbao at a young age, but it appears the player will remain in Northern Spain for the foreseeable future.

Buyout clauses are a key feature of contracts within the Spanish game, and if a big club were to activate the clause and offer Williams an enticing financial package, then you would expect a deal to be concluded. Liverpool fans keen on Williams should not be too disheartened should the player agree to new terms, although the fee required to secure his signature would certainly increase.
