Liverpool supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side become the first team to beat Manchester City in the Premier League this season courtesy of a 4-3 victory at Anfield on Sunday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the table-toppers off the back of a 17-match unbeaten streak in all competitions, a run which has seen them move above both Arsenal and Tottenham in the race for Champions League football next season. And the Reds produced an outstanding display to see off Pep Guardiola’s side on Sunday, with goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Mohamed Salah securing the three points for the Merseyside giants, who in turn moved above Premier League champions Chelsea into third place in the table.
Subsequently, there have been many delighted and buoyant Liverpudlians in the Tavern this week, although they are unlikely to be overly thrilled by a recent report from The Sun, which suggests that reported Reds target Inaki Williams has signed a new deal at Athletic Bilbao.
The 23-year-old forward came up through the ranks at the La Liga outfit to make his debut for the senior team back in December 2014, from which he has since added a further 139 appearances, netting 30 goals and laying on 20 assists in the process.
And his excellent efforts for the Spanish outfit reportedly attracted the attention of Klopp’s Liverpool in the last few years, although the Reds have since suffered a huge setback as recent reports suggest that an agreement has been reached to keep Williams at Bilbao until 2025, at the same time inserting an eye-watering £96 million release clause.
And with Liverpool possibly in the market to replace Philippe Coutinho, who joined Barcelona earlier this month, this is news unlikely to be well received by Klopp and the club’s hierarchy.
Landlord’s verdict: Inaki Williams has been in tremendous form for Athletic Bilbao in the last few years, to the point that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have reportedly been keeping tabs on him ahead of a possible move.
However, they appear to have suffered a potentially huge setback as Williams has reportedly agreed a new deal with the Spanish outfit, which reportedly includes a staggering £96 million buy-out clause.
And while the Reds may not be short of funds following Philippe Coutinho’s sale to Barcelona, that’s still a figure likely to price them out of a future move for the 23-year-old.
