Newcastle’s prolonged search for a right back has led them to Ajax’s doorstep as Dutch international Gregory van der Wiel becomes a target.
Alan Pardew’s side will be looking build on a stunning season, where they defied the odds to finish in 5th place, above so called “bigger clubs” Chelsea and Liverpool and secured a place in this year’s Europa League – a superb achievement, especially when some pundits were sceptical of how Pardew would fare in his first full season at Newcastle.
But his work hasn’t stopped this summer as he looks to take Newcastle on step further and qualify for the Champions League and with a young, vibrant team containing Yohan Cabaye, Cheikh Tiote, Hatem Ben Arfa and Papiss Cisse, who would write them off right now?
Pardew’s main area of concern this summer has been at right back, and Newcastle have been linked with Lille’s French international Mathieu Debuchy for the entirety of the summer, but a deal doesn’t seem close at the moment – prompting interest in Gregory van der Wiel.
Apparently, Newcastle have lined up a deal for van der Wiel and may be able to get him on the cheap because his contract expires next summer, and Ajax are keen to cash in – it hasn’t come at a great time for the Dutch giants though, as van der Wiel had an atrocious European Championship campaign, putting many of his suitors off.
If van der Wiel can rediscover his form that made him a regular in the Dutch national team, then Newcastle could be set for a bargain – but if they continue to pursue a right back, I think that Debuchy would be the safer option and an easier fit in the team, with his good friend Cabaye already at the club.
