Alejandro Gomez is the Adam Lallana upgrade Liverpool really need

Liverpool’s excellent transfer business has made them early favourites to challenge Manchester City for the title.

Jurgen Klopp has splashed £170m to strengthen his squad in the wake of defeat in the Champions League final. Naby Keita and Fabinho will give the German two world-class options in the engine room while Xherdan Shaqiri will provide some much-needed cover to Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah. Liverpool’s goalkeeping problem has also been solved by the world-record £67m signing of Alisson Becker.

Their transfer business has seen them instilled as second favourites to get their hands on the Premier League trophy next season. Despite their fantastic signings so far, the Reds are yet to properly replace Philippe Coutinho at Anfield. With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain out for the season and Adam Lallana failing to impress, a new playmaker still needs to be signed.

One man Klopp should consider is Atalanta ace – Alejandro Gomez. Valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, the 30-year-old has been one of the Serie A’s best players in recent seasons. He scored eight goals and registered 12 assists for his side last year. In the 2016/17 season, Gomez enjoyed his best year to date, scoring 16 and creating 10 in the league.

The Argentinean is approaching the prime of his career and would add some much-needed competition for Roberto Firmino in the Liverpool attack. Gomez can play behind or as the striker as well as on the left wing. He has terrific pace and an eye for goal – highlighted with a sublime curling goal against Everton in the Europa League.

Despite his age, Gomez represents a significant upgrade on Lallana and would give Klopp the playmaker he needs this summer.
