Arsenal found out on Friday that they will be playing Rennes in the Europa League for a place in the next round.
However, they may have just seen their chances of qualifying for the next stage of the competition take a huge blow.
According to a report by Sky Sports, Alexandre Lacazette has been issued with a three-game ban and will subsequently miss the entire tie.
The striker was sent off in the first-leg defeat to BATE Borisov after elbowing Aleksandar Filipovic late on and missed Thursday’s win because of it.
However, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) have decided to add two more matches to the £58.5million-rated ace, as per Transfermarkt, meaning he will now be unavailable for the clash with Rennes.
The Europa League will represent Arsenal’s only hope of winning silverware this season, however, their chances of doing so will have taken a big blow following the news of Lacazette’s extended ban.
Unai Emery has plenty of experience of winning the competition, however, he will have been counting on the Frenchman to have played a key role in the latter stages of the tournament.
The 27-year-old has been in fine form this season for The Gunners, having scored 12 goals and provided eight assists in 33 appearances so far this season, although only one of those goals have come in the Europa League.
