Alireza Jahanbakhsh could be Tottenham’s perfect Malcom alternative

According to a recent report from France Football (via talkSPORT) Tottenham Hotspur are in talks with Bordeaux regarding a potential deal for Malcom.

Bordeaux’s 21-year-old winger rose to fame last season for his brilliant performances in Ligue 1 whilst predominantly operating in a right-midfield position, and his fine form has caused plenty of Europe’s top teams to stand up and take notice, Tottenham included.

With 12 goals and 7 assists from just 35 appearances it’s easy to understand why Spurs are showing an interest in Malcom, but with interest likely to be rife from across the continent they may not have it all their own way in their pursuit.

With that to consider, Mauricio Pochettino should have at least one alternative option in mind to target in the event that Malcom eventually decides against a move to North London, and one player who should be firmly on his radar is Alireza Jahanbakhsh.

The Iran international plays his trade with AZ Alkmar in the Eredivisie where he has caught the eye in recent seasons for his direct style of dribbling and ability to bypass defenders with his unpredictable approach.

In terms of his end-product, he certainly has the killer instinct to match his impressive build up play: a record of 22 goals and 14 assists from 39 appearances in all-competitions last season serves to illuminate the extent of the 24-year-old’s electric ability.

As any avid watcher of the Premier League will know, players arriving from Dutch top-tier football can find it incredibly difficult to adapt to the intensity of English football. Davy Klaasen’s dismal career at Everton is one of the most telling examples of how difficult it can be, but there is plenty of evidence to suggest Jahanbakhsh would be a risk worth taking for Spurs.

His goal-scoring record is phenomenal and he possesses the versatility to play across the attacking midfield three either as a number ten or in a wide position and, with the rare ambidextrous quality to use his left and right foot to equal effect, there’s no doubt Spurs would be acquiring a huge talent if they were willing to adopt a patient attitude towards his development.
