Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern will be delighted with their early business in the transfer window as they look to put their Champions League heartbreak behind them.
The Reds were defeated in the final of the competition by Real Madrid with Loris Karius making two horrific errors which ultimately cost his side the game. Jurgen Klopp responded to the defeat by making his first summer move, spending £40m to sign Monaco midfielder Fabinho. RB Leipzig playmaker, Naby Keita, will also seal his move to Merseyside on July 1.
Klopp is expected to continue his summer recruitment drive in the coming weeks with Lyon attacker Nabil Fekir strongly linked with a switch to Anfield. Following Karius’ errors, a new keeper is also on the shortlist with Roma’s Alisson the primary target. However, the Italian side will hold out for a world record amount, with Real Madrid also interested.
Should they miss out on Alissson, Liverpool should instead launch a bid for Lazio goalkeeper – Thomas Strakosha. Valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, the Albanian is an upgrade on Karius and a much less risky signing than bringing in Stoke City’s Jack Butland. At 23-years-old, he has plenty of time to develop into a top shot-stopper.
He kept 17 clean sheets in all competitions last season and has fantastic reflexes. He has averaged more saves per 90 minutes than Karius and other goalkeeping targets Jan Oblak and Gianluigi Donnarumma according to Squawka.
If Karius and Simon Mignolet depart, the Reds would be making a smart move in signing Strakosha.
