Tottenham climbed into the top six of the Premier League thanks to a 2-1 victory at the DW Stadium.
With Jermain Defoe ruled out by an illness, Rafael van der Vaart was restored to the starting line-up and stepped in alongside Emmanuel Adebayor. It only took three minutes for the Dutchman to put the North Londoners in front as he latched onto Adebayor’s cross to fire in unmarked.
Tottenham were absolutely cruising during the first half, as the Latics defence was clearly in generous mood – much to the clear disgust of Roberto Martinez. It was only a matter of time before Spurs doubled their lead and Gareth Bale met a Modriccorner unmarked to make it 2-0.
The first half continued to be dominated by the visitors and Martinez will have been absolutely delighted to go in at just 2-0 down such was the dominance of Spurs.
The second half saw a much improved Wigan performance and they got off to a perfect start as Mohamed Diame capitalised on a mistake by Assou-Ekotto to fire in past Brad Friedel. It appeared to be game-on; however a second booking for Steve Gohouri saw the Latics reduced to 10men and seemingly lost any hope of getting something out of the game. Victor Moses tried his best to force a late equaliser, but the visitors were able to see the game out.
