Liverpool have begun the 2018 winter transfer window in extremely busy fashion, with the monster signing of £75 million man Virgil van Dijk offset by the near £150 million sale of Philippe Coutinho.
Manager Jurgen Klopp appears keen to get his business done early, and could remain active in the coming days as he explores ways in which to utilise his windfall from the sale of the classy Brazilian. Liverpool fans are a regular bunch in The Transfer Tavern, with the boys from Anfield always keen to share their thoughts on their beloved side with our landlord over a cool pint. In between renditions of You’ll Never Walk Alone, our landlord caught up with the north westerners, gauging their opinion of where the Coutinho money must be spent. Several areas of the squad were identified, including a winger, central midfielder and another defender, but most agreed that a new goalkeeper had to be high on the agenda.
Liverpool have struggled in goal in recent years, with the likes of Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius failing to establish themselves as clear numbers ones, and fans would like to see an established shot stopper brought in with the Coutinho funds. One fan touted a move for Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak, who could be tempted to swap the Spanish capital for the coastal English city should he be convinced of the club’s ambitions. Atletico are a shadow of the side they had been under Diego Simeone over the past few years, and the Slovenian may decide to pursue a new challenge in the coming weeks.
Liverpool are an exciting side who play a phenomenal brand of football, and despite the sale of their talismanic playmaker, maintain a plethora of talent on their books. Business has been conducted between the two clubs in the past, with Fernando Torres the notable success story of both sides, and Oblak could follow in the striker’s footsteps. Liverpool would acquire one of the best goalkeepers in world football should they stump up the cash for Oblak, and with a reliable man between the sticks, Klopp could edge closer towards a challenge for silverware in coming seasons.
Liverpool fans, should some of he Coutinho cash be spent on a reliable goalkeeper? Let us know!
