Ambitious transfer move could have negative impact on Newcastle United’s survival bid

The Toon Army in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to seeing their side return to Premier League action this weekend.

Rafa Benitez will be fully aware of the magnitude of the task at hand this weekend, as they go to Manchester looking to end United’s record of 38 home matches without defeat in all competitions. Jose Mourinho’s side have not suffered defeat since Manchester City ran out 2-1 winners at Old Trafford in September 2016.

Indeed, the statistic is rather daunting for the Newcastle contingent propping up the bar here who are struggling to see a positive outcome for their side on Saturday evening.

Newcastle have been rather goal-shy since their return to the top-flight this season, so it seems peculiar that rumours emerging from Marca (via talkSPORT)have linked Barcelona goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen with a move to Tyneside in January.

Only 4 sides can boast a better defensive record in the League this season, and Newcastle’s goalkeeper Rob Elliot’s sturdy performances between the sticks have been instrumental to their defensive success.

Although the rumoured price of just £9 million to prize Cillessen away from the Nou Camp would represent excellent value for money, Elliot’s form suggests the last thing Newcastle need at this moment is another goalkeeper.

It would be much shrewder for the Newcastle hierarchy to invest £9 million into a forward-thinking player, such as an intricate number 10 to install some flair into Newcastle’s attacking dynamic, or a proven goalscorer who will do the business when presented with half a chance inside the penalty area.

Replacing an in-form goalkeeper during the mid-season window would be a decision verging on suicidal, and Benitez should work in conjunction with Ashley or the new owners to bring players of attacking quality to the club in January.
