Chelsea’s search for a defender goes on, with Athletico Madrid’s Diego Godin the latest name to be linked with the Premiership champions.
Carlo Ancelotti is still in the market for a centre-back to cover for the injured Alex, and has been linked with a host of top defenders, including Borussia Dortmund pair, Neven Subotic and Mats Hummels, as well as Bolton’s Gary Cahill.
Benfica’s David Luiz also seems to crop up in the headlines every few weeks, too.
Unfortunately for Chelsea fans, the club’s targets have so far been little more than conjecture; Subotic has stated he is going nowhere, while talk about his teammate, Hummels, also appears to have died down, and Chelsea are thought to be unwilling to match Bolton’s £20m valuation of Cahill. They have also been priced out of a move for Luiz, with Benfica holding out for £35m.
Therefore, it now seems Diego Godin is the player most likely to arrive at Stamford Bridge this month. He only joined Athletico at the start of the season, following an impressive three-season spell with Villarreal, yet Chelsea are confident that a bid of £15m will be enough to persuade Athletico to part with their star defender.
With time and alternatives fast running out, Ancelotti can ill-afford to miss out on his latest target.
