Andrew Robertson thoroughly deserves the plaudits for becoming captain of Scotland

This time last season Liverpool’s defensive unit was a major cause for concern and posed a major detriment to their title ambitions, but the emergence of Andrew Robertson and the arrival of Virgil Van Dijk have transformed Jurgen Klopp’s back-four into a seemingly unbreakable force.

Robertson’s rise in particular has been one of the standout individual stories of Liverpool’s development in the past 12 months, as the left-back who was initially forced to wait for an opportunity at Anfield with Alberto Moreno ahead of him in the pecking order has not only established himself as the club’s first-choice left-back, but also as captain of his national side.

Indeed, it was confirmed yesterday that Robertson will replace Celtic’s Scott Brown as captain of the Scotland national side, much to the delight of the Liverpool supporters.

In response to reports our very own Ally Darlow delved into Twitter to assess the reaction from the Liverpool fans which was fuelled by sheer delight and support for their talismanic full-back.

And based on the quality of his performances since he broke into the first-team it’s fair to say that he deserves every last bit of praise which looks set to come his way over the course of the next few days.

Robertson has been a valuable weapon in the final-third when marauding up Liverpool’s left-flank, but the level of solidity he has helped to install into a shaky defence is perhaps is greatest achievement since joining from Hull City.

Now valued at £22.5 million (as per transfermarkt) Robertson’s individual story has been both compelling and intriguing since he signed for Liverpool for a bargain fee of just £8 million initially.

If he continues to blossom at this exponential rate there’s no doubt he will cement himself as one of the best full-backs of the Premier League in the years to come, so he deserves every bit of credit for his recent monumental achievement.
