Punters in the Football Transfer Tavern have been wondering lately who Manchester United would try and target to replace Nemanja Vidic at Old Trafford.
Today’s copy of The Express has a new name in the frame as they report that Roma’s Mehdi Benatia is believed to be first on David Moyes’ wishlist.
Italian suggestions indicate that the 26-year-old Moroccan international, who only joined Roma from Udinese in a deal worth £11 million last summer, has been outlined as the perfect candidate for Moyes and United.
Benatia surprised us in the tavern last season when be decided to join Roma instead of considering the other big teams interested in his services.
He has always stated his love of Italy and before making the move last summer, said: “I am loving my time in Italy. The league is a very good one and to be honest an important Italian team will always be my first choice unless a huge English, Spanish or German club come for me.
“The Italian league is a top championship with top clubs who are very attractive as well, but if I have an offer from a big club here I will listen to that club.”
Despite this Moyes is likely to try and persuade the classy defender that Manchester is as nice as Italy
Vidic confirmed he would be leaving at the end of the campaign, with a deal to join Inter Milan thought to be in its final stages.
Would the Roma man be a suitable replacement for Vidic at Old Trafford? Let us know your thoughts below.
