Antonio Conte has reportedly made his choice as Blues identify number one summer target

Much was made of Chelsea’s defence last season in the Football Transfer Tavern…

Most supporters were unanimous in their admiration for the backline, with many touting it as the Premier League’s best. Antonio Conte, though, seemingly has reservations about it – and according to Gianluca Di Marzio, the Italian is planning to upgrade it this summer.

Indeed, Gianluca Di Marzio is reporting that defender Virgil van Dijk has been made Chelsea’s number one target for the summer, with the Italian boss clearly impressed with the Southampton captain.

Van Dijk, of course, spent much of the last campaign watching on from the sidelines, with the Dutchman struggling for fitness. Conte seemingly hasn’t been put off, though, and with good reason.

Over the last few years, the defender has proven himself as one of the Premier League’s best, quickly becoming arguably Southampton’s most important player. Strong in the air, excellent with the ball at his feet and a¬†defensive master, he is in many ways the complete defender.

For Chelsea, whilst their defence was stellar last season, the departure of John Terry this summer will leave a big gap in the squad, and so a move for the Dutchman does make a lot of sense.
