Despite falling into obscurity in recent years, the Chelsea fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern are keen to see this Chelsea ace given another chance in a Blue shirt!
Since the arrival of Antonio Conte at Chelsea, the signs have all been good from a youth perspective for the Chelsea fans in the Tavern.
Young players including Ola Aina and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have received game-time and featured in match day squads thus far, and Antonio Conte has repeatedly spoken about the need to incorporate young, home-grown talent into the Chelsea first team set up.
However, one player that has received remarkably less attention thus far this season is young midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah.
The Englishman has had a mixed spell in recent years, often failing to make any real impact on various loan moves since a stellar year-long campaign with Watford during the 2012-13 season – though the Chelsea faithful in the Tavern still rate him highly.
It was widely expected that he would continue his development on loan again this season, but after an impressive pre-season campaign under Conte – the Italian manager has seemingly decided to retain the services of the midfielder for the season ahead.
Several of the more cynical Chelsea fans in the Tavern have suggested that he is only still at the club because nobody wanted to bring him in on a short-term deal – but that doesn’t appear to be the case.
According to the Independent, Chelsea reportedly rejected an approach by Premier League champions Leicester for Chalobah, with Claudio Ranieri’s apparently keen to take him to the King Power on a season-long loan deal.
They add that, crucially, it was Antonio Conte that made the decision to prevent the deal going ahead – with the Italian seemingly keen for Chalobah to become a key part of the Chelsea first team set up this season.
Our bar staff think that this show of faith will certainly provide Chalobah with an extra dash of confidence, given that his role within the Chelsea set-up has been limited in recent years.
Whilst he has failed to nail down a spot with the Blues in recent seasons, Chalobah has consistently proven his quality on an international level – having been a reliable performer throughout his time with the England developmental sides.
Since his debuting for the England u16’s in 2008, Chalobah has progressed through to the current u21 crop of players – and made an astonishing 88 appearances in the process.
Our landlord is backing him to make a similar level of impact at Chelsea over the next few years.
Chelsea fans – a HUGE show of faith from Conte there; do you agree?
