The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping for a few new signings between now and the end of the summer…
The Blues have done well to bring in a few players this summer, particularly after a slow start, but with so many competitions to fight for next season, it is clear that a few more bodies are needed.
Antonio Conte, though, has now revealed that their lack of progress this summer is not through a lack of trying, with the Italian stating that Chelsea had an interest in Kyle Walker earlier this summer.
According to the Daily Mail, he said: “Every player is expensive…You go to buy a right back, a left back or a central defender and he is expensive. If you want Kyle Walker, you know Walker is expensive. We tried to buy Walker”.
Though it remains unclear whether Chelsea made a move for the Englishman or not, it is clear that the Blues had a genuine interest in him, and it appears as though his price tag is what made Chelsea miss out on a move.
Given the Blues’ current defensive situation, with a severe lack of depth on the flanks, it’s easy to see why they were keen. Man City, however, won the race for the Englishman.
This news came as a real surprise to our landlord as there was no real suggestion in the press touting the Blues as having a firm interest in the Englishman.
Still, retrospectively, it makes a lot of sense. Walker is an attacking, experienced defender – and given that Victor Moses is Chelsea’s only real option at present, he would have fit in well.
There is still a real lack of a player of his quality in the Chelsea first team, though, and so Conte still has work to do this summer.
