In recent weeks, West Ham have been dealt a few injury blows to give manager Manuel Pellegrini, who has already been without the likes of Andriy Yarmolenko and Ryan Fredericks for some time now, an even bigger headache.
As a result, the Chilean has looked towards some of the squad’s more fringe players over the last couple of Premier League fixtures such as Michail Antonio with the 28-year-old since coming out to explain how much he is enjoying his football again.
Due to the arrival of Yarmolenko and injury, Antonio had not been able to tie down a regular starting spot in the earlier part of the campaign. However, much to his delight, since then, his fortunes have drastically changed.
“It was difficult, even though I started the first game of the season against Liverpool,” Antonio told West Ham’s official club website when speaking about his fitness and form at the beginning of the season.
“When your mind is telling you to do something, but your body isn’t doing it, that was the bit I was struggling with. I’m starting to get my sharpness back now and I’m enjoying my football again.”
With the current state of West Ham’s squad, £10.8m-rated (Transfermarkt) Antonio could not have chosen a better time to put his injuries behind him and raise his game.
The former Nottingham Forest man has scored twice in his last four appearances, while his versatility has proven to be massive for Pellegrini who has been given quite the selection dilemma of late with so many key players unavailable.
As the games continue to come thick and fast during this period of the season, Antonio can show his worth to the Hammers even further.
