Newcastle's hunt for more players before the end of the transfer window is very much still on, although Mike Ashley won't be looking to spend much money.

Rafa Benitez will be looking to strengthen his squad ahead of the beginning of the season. The Spaniard, however, will only be able to bring in any more players under the proviso that they are very much within Newcastle's very tight budget.

In defence, Newcastle have strengthened with the signing of Fabian Schar but with the club lacking any true quality and depth at left-back, the Magpies need to dip into the transfer market once more.

With that in mind, the Mirror is reporting that Newcastle are targeting a move for Everton full-back Leighton Baines who is valued at £7.2 million by Transfermarkt.

The Breakdown

While this possible deal may seem like Newcastle are getting an experienced defender for a relatively low fee, it's one the club should avoid. Any potential transfer seems to stem from the impending arrival of Barcelona full-back Lucas Digne, which makes sense for Everton but not for Newcastle.

Yes, for a time Baines was a top Premier League footballer but at 33, the full-back is now in the backend of his career.

Moreover, in a time where full-backs are arguably one of the most important positions on the pitch, there is a great deal of emphasis placed on how well they attack and if they have the pace to recover.

Baines simply just doesn't have the legs anymore, and Newcastle would be wasting money on signing him.
