Is the Drog about to em-‘bark’ on a new walk around the Camp Nou?
According to reports in Spain Chelsea’s Champions League hero and legendary striker Didier Drogba is a surprise target for the club he helped eliminate from the Champions League this season Barcelona.
The Catalan giants see Drogba as an impact player similar to when they signed Henrik Larsson in 2006.
Reports suggest Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta is ready to offer the Ivorian forward a one-year deal with the option of a 12-month extension. It is no secret Drogba wants to stay at Chelsea but it seems the club are unwilling to offer him the 2-year deal he desires.
Drogba has also been linked with lucrative moves to Russia, Qatar, USA and Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua, now run by former striker partner Nicolas Anelka.
I don’t know how much substance there is to this story as no direct quotes are mentioned and the Spanish media are well known for linking players to their clubs which never materialise.
The major sticking point I see in this story is Barcelona only want to offer Drogba a one-year deal with an option – which they don’t have to take up – of a further year. Well if he is willing to accept only a guarenteed one-year deal then surely he’d stay at Chelsea.
If Drogba does leave Chelsea this summer – which most fans hope he does not – I don’t see him moving to a top European team. A move to Russia, USA or China seems much more plausible to me.
