Fernando Torres is a name constantly on everyone’s lips in the Football Transfer Tavern, and a few punters gather round Dean Jones of the Daily Mirror who reckons mega-rich Russians Anzhi Makhachkala are ready to try and offer him an escape from his Chelsea nightmare.
Manager Guus Hiddink is good friends with Roman Abramovich, and is understood to have discussed a potential move for the Spanish striker in January.
Abramovich is still hopeful Rafael Benitez will be able to help Torres rediscover the type of form he produced when they last worked together at Liverpool, although time is understood to be running out for the clubs record signing.
Anzhi would offer an interesting option for Torres, with the possibility of doubling his wages, and forming a partnership with former Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o, whilst escaping from the league he has struggled in for so long.
A source close to Torres revealed he is still hoping to prove himself at Stamford Bridge saying:
“Nobody from Chelsea has told him he will be sold but but it’s normal that the club are not satisfied with his perfomances.
“But the person affected most by all this is the player. Nando is conscious that he is not offering his best level.”
