Tottenham’s courtship of Jan Vertonghen seemed to be going just perfectly. The Ajax Captain was spotted at the side’s final day victory over Fulham, and The Mail believe the player held talks at White Hart Lane after the game.
While in Holland Ajax manager Frank de Boer was being quoted stating the club wouldn’t stand in the way if their 25 year old defender wished to move to England. However despite all of these positive signals the Vertonghen transfer to Tottenham is in danger of becoming a classic summer saga.
The Mail are reporting that a difference in valuation between the two clubs could yet derail Vertonghen’s move to London. Spurs aren’t willing to go any higher than £9 million for a player who would be available on a free in a years time, but Ajax appear determined to ensure they receive at least £9 million for their in demand captain.
Tottenham must have been aware of the fee being demanded by the Dutch club prior to inviting the Belgian international to London for talks. This would suggest that Spurs may ultimately be willing to stump up the extra cash and not miss out on such a highly rated player for the sake of , what in the frivolous spending world of Premiership football is a pittance.
Although Tottenham did dig their heels in when it came to holding on to Luka Modric I wouldn’t expect the same stubbornness to apply when it comes to arrivals rather than departures this summer. Plus Redknapp and co will be eager to demonstrate their desire for future success at the Lane in the wake of the England debacle.
