Liverpool are reportedly linked with a move for Portuguese midfielder Ricardo Quaresma, after the star rejected the latest contract offer from Besiktas. Would he be a suitable acquisition?
The 28 year old winger, who has been a mainstay on fans lips all around Europe since 2001, has long been linked with a return to English football, following a short stint at Chelsea in 2009. It now appears that Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is seeking to attract the Besiktas star to Anfield.
His free flowing style would certainly be of great benefit to a Liverpool side, who are struggling to create, and finish their chances, leaving them stranded in the relegation zone with an eighth of the season gone. With only 12 months remaining on his contract at the Turkish club, Liverpool would be able to afford his £80,000 a week wages, without the burden of a hefty transfer fee.
Would Rodgers, for all his current experience, be able to handle the rather volatile nature of the winger? Despite his talents, Quaresma has never fully lived up to the lofty heights expected of him, when he signed for Barcelona in 2003 as a 19 year old, with the world at his feet. He is an extremely gifted player, and his ability to unlock the tightest of defences would be crucial in Liverpool’s bid to achieve a top half finish this season.
However, he is reportedly very difficult to work with, and that has been demonstrated occasionally with his actions on, and off the pitch. His first year at Besiktas culminating with an on the pitch brawl, with a fellow team mate. Previous incidents of disobedience not limited to his refusal to play for Barcelona, as long as Frank Rijkaard was in charge. He may indeed disrupt the squad harmony that Rodgers is trying to implement, with his mixture of Liverpool’s youth and their old guard.
Despite his temperamental issues, a talent of Quaresma’s available on a free is one that should never be overlooked, and indeed many clubs have shown interest in signing him. Malaga, Hamburg, Seville, West Ham and Spartak Moscow, all have reportedly shown interest recently, and if Liverpool want to bring the skilled winger to Anfield, then they best decide soon.
