The Football Transfer Tavern has come to a halt at the news that Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing up a deal for Lazio rebel Mauro Zarate according to Metro who claim that the manager is hopeful of landing the target after the Argentinian stepped up his attempts to leave.
The player has long been a divisive presence in the Lazio locker room and is desperate to leave the club he is so unhappy at. AVB has been aware of this for some time now and despite being unwilling to spend the £5 million Lazio want they feel that they can lure him for free should the 26-year-old force his way out.
Ideally, the forward would like his contract cancelled by mutual consent and then a move to another club could take place. Tottenham are not the only club tracking the forward who has seven clubs interested. Zarate spent a loan spell at Birmingham in 2008 and managed to net four times in 14 matches and impressed during his time in the Premier League.
After asking to be kept updated of the situation, AVB is willing to offer a one-year deal despite the wages that Zarate will command. Of course Spurs are on the lookout for new forwards for the start of next season and someone so versatile will certainly be of interest to them.
