Arrival of £40.5m goalkeeper would allow Chelsea to forget all about Courtois – agreed?

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are concerned about the long-term future of Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian is yet to sign a new deal at Stamford Bridge, and with just one year left on his deal at the club, the prospect of him departing is a very real problem.

It was no real surprise, then, when the Blues were linked with a move for Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson, with Corriere dello Sport reporting earlier this week that Chelsea have entered the race for him.

Losing Courtois would, undoubtedly, be a surprise and a blow for the club, but our landlord thinks that if Chelsea were able to land Alisson, the Belgian could become a mere memory for the club.

Indeed, over the last season, there’s an argument to suggest that he’s been even better than the current Chelsea goalkeeper.

He’s a fantastic shot-stopper in every regard, both in terms of close, quick-fire attempts and also more precise or powerful strikes from distance. Clearly, then, he’s very adaptable, and at 6ft2, he’s also more than comfortable from set pieces.

Alisson, who is rated at £40.5 million by Transfer Markt, has also been placed in the Team of the Season, which is based on his average performance rating this season, and that’s a testament to his quality.

Courtois is clearly a top goalkeeper, but there’s an argument to suggest that he has underperformed in a Chelsea shirt this season. Petr Cech’s performances for the Blues were consistently brilliant, and there were never any concerns that he might make a mistake. In Courtois, though, that reputation has not yet been garnered, and he proved against Barcelona last season that he’s still got a mistake in him.

A move for Alisson, then, though expensive, could be what Chelsea need.
