Arrival of £45m-rated defender at Arsenal could end Koscielny’s career at the Emirates – agreed?

After another year of disappointment, the Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are ready for some serious changes this summer. The Gunners have been poor for a while now, and they no longer need an evolution – now they need a revolution.

Big changes are needed up and down the field this summer, and in particular, the defence is in need of a rebuild.

Fortunately, they’re reportedly working to that end, with the Express reporting that Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly is a key target this summer. The big Senegalese centre-half, who is rated at £45 million by Transfer Markt, has impressed this season, and he represents exactly the sort of player that the Gunners should be after.

Indeed, he’d be a fantastic fit in the heart of the Arsenal defence, and there’s even an argument to suggest that he would be the perfect replacement for Frenchman Laurent Koscielny at the back.

Koscielny, of course, is set for a long-term injury layoff after suffering yet another Achilles setback, and it’s clear that injuries are beginning to take their toll on him. Not to mention, his form this season has clearly dropped off significantly. He’s no longer the unbreakable, relentless defender that he once was – and that has been reflected in the poor performance of the Gunners at the back.

Furthermore, he’s also already 32-year-old, and so finding a replacement makes sense for the long-term and is something that the Gunners need to do.

For Koulibaly’s part, he’d be an excellent fit in the Premier League. Strong, powerful and quick, he’d be a real rock at the back for a team that desperately needs improvement in that regard. He’s also very solid with the ball at his feet, and so the pass-and-move style of play that Arsenal have utilised in recent years would fit his style well.

For Arsenal, this is a deal that makes perfect sense.
