The Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern have been impressed by what they have seen from their new signing Lucas Moura since he moved to North-London on deadline day in January, but recent reports suggest that Mauricio Pochettino could be set to bring another winger to the club this summer.
The resident Lilywhites lining up our bar had been calling for their club to sign a winger who is willing to take on his opposite number for months prior to Moura’s transfer to the club, so his arrival naturally delighted the supporters. Since he moved from Paris to London, Moura has been used rather sporadically by Pochettino, but he has shown plenty of promise during his appearances so far.
Aside from Heung-Min Son, Moura is the only natural winger at the club, but according to reports emerging from The Daily Mail, Tottenham could be set to add another wide-option to their ranks next summer by landing Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha (valued at £22.5 million by Transfermarkt). The report claims that Spurs are willing to offer £40 million for Zaha’s services, although Palace are holding out for much more than that.
If Spurs were able to sign Zaha this summer they would be adding a player of pure talent who would offer an exciting dynamic in the the final-third, and his arrival could also be beneficial to Dele Alli on an individual level. Alli has been widely criticised this season predominantly due to his tendency to dive, but also due to the perceived dip in the quality of his performances.
Alli has scored 10 goals and provided 16 assists from his 40 appearances for the club this season, which suggests his criticism has largely been unjustified. However, the overall level of his form has been slightly below what he has demonstrated in previous seasons.
But the arrival of Zaha could enable Alli to rediscover his finest form for Tottenham due to his ability to draw in the challenges of defenders and create space for his teammates. When Zaha is on the ball he naturally attracts challenges from multiple defenders who often struggle to cope with the speed of his feet, and his quality in this regard would certainly increase Alli’s freedom on the pitch.
Although Zaha’s final ball is rather inconsistent, the number of times he attempts to drive into the box and create opportunities will also serve to improve Alli’s goal-threat, so the controversial 21-year-old should urge Pochettino to do everything in his power to sign Palace’s crown jewel this summer.Like what the TT have on offer?
