Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern couldn’t quite get their head around claims from one of their international stars today, as they expressed disbelief as they escaped the cold January weather with a pint in the warm bar.
The Mirror, reporting via L’Equipe, quotes Arsenal’s French international Mathieu Debuchy as admitting regret in staying with the Gunners this season- and has accused Arsene Wenger as misleading him over his future.
Debuchy has struggled to feature this season with Hector Bellerin consistently selected ahead of him, which has put Debuchy’s European Championship hopes in jeopardy. As such, he said he has to leave in January and when asked if he regrets staying at Arsenal this summer, he revealed that is certainly the case.
“Yes, clearly I have lost six months. I would have preferred to have left last summer but the coach told me I would have my chance. It was not the case. I don’t know who is responsible. Last year, I was injured (shoulder) and I was out a long time and Bellerin played well.”
“This summer, I had a good pre-season and I was ready to begin the season as a starter but the coach decided otherwise. That is competition, no problem. That is football.”
An exit could rock Arsenal’s title challenge as it would see the Gunners options at the right-side of defence depleted, although they still do have Calum Chambers capable of filling the roll should Bellerin be absent for any reason.
Our punters are far from pleased with Debuchy though, stating that if he hasn’t been able to dislodge Bellerin from the side then he only has himself to blame.
