Currently crocked Arsenal star Theo Walcott has struck another moral victory over North London neighbours Tottenham in our latest Transfer Tavern poll regarding who should be England’s first choice right sider at next summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
Receiving 46% of readers’ votes and beating off seemingly stiff competition from Tottenham and England’s flavour of the month Andros Townsend who came second with 34% of readers’ votes, it’s clear that the majority of punters still believe Walcott is the man Roy Hodgson should place his faith within on the Three Lions’ right flank.
Townsend has just enjoyed the best two weeks of his career to date, striking on his full international debut for England against Montenegro and following this up with another fantastic display against Poland, then signing a new four-year deal with Spurs and then striking in yesterday’s comfortable 2-0 victory against Aston Villa.
However, despite his gallivanting runs down the right flank, frightening defenders in his wake, it is still the lightning speed of his Arsenal counterpart Theo Walcott which is most desired, despite the Gunners star often being questioned regarding consistency in his crossing accuracy – something that can’t be levelled at Townsend right now.
Perhaps punters believe that Townsend would be more effective coming on late in World Cup group games and hopefully beyond, taking advantage of tiring limbs, but then again, we assume this may simply be a case of Arsenal wanting to trump their rivals in any which way possible!
Hodgson boasts a handful of alternative options altogether such as Townsend’s Tottenham team-mate Aaron Lennon, who made his comeback for Spurs yesterday. The former Leeds United flyer came in third place with 6% of readers’ vote.
Elsewhere, Liverpool wonderkid Raheem Sterling came in fourth with 5% of readers’ votes while Arsenal’s crocked Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain came in fifth with 5% and Manchester United’s Ashley Young in last place with 4%
