Arsenal aiming to resurrect deal for German international

Lars BenderThe few Arsenal fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are looking rather depressed this evening after watching their side concede a 90th minute equaliser courtesy of Mathieu Flamini’s unfortunate own goal against Swansea City.

While the chastening defeat to Chelsea spelled the end of their title challenge, last night was the final nail in the coffin with the Gunners’ fourth place starting to look precarious following another victory for fifth placed Everton.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, who managed his 10001st game last night, is under pressure to strengthen his side again in the summer after he admitted that their age of austerity is over.

Today’s Mail Online suggests that Wenger is now preparing to move for Bayer Leverkusen star Lars Bender once again, after seeing an offer rejected last summer.

The 24-year-old is very highly rated in the Bundesliga and he is likely to star for Germany at the upcoming World Cup in Brazil.

This could see his price going through the roof with Wenger eager to sign him up before the summer’s showpiece tournament kicks off.

Arsenal’s chief scout Steve Rowley was spotted at a recent Leverkusen game as the club look for a dynamic midfielder to replace 32-year-old Mikel Arteta in the long-run.

It was reported in the summer that the Gunners saw a £19 million bid rejected but it seems that Wenger’s interest hasn’t waned during the past season.
