The Daily Mail have Arsenal fans almost trying to bang their heads against a brick wall here in the Football Transfer Tavern with the latest rumour about the Gunners.
The publication claims that Arsene Wenger is close to finalising the re-signing of former Gunners midfielder Mathieu Flamini this summer after the Frenchman was released by AC Milan.
Flamini left Arsenal in 2008 despite pleas to stay and Wenger now seems keen on bringing the 29-year-old back to North London, and given Flamini has been training with the club for two weeks now, the manager must have some idea as to his condition.
Whilst it is not exactly the star signing that Gunners fans wanted, in reality their squad is down to the bare bones and someone simply has to be brought in as soon as possible.
Wenger is still looking at the other options that are available to him including Karim Benzema and also Iker Casillas. There are even rumours that the chase for Luis Suarez is not over, with the club set to make a final bid after Champions League qualification is officially confirmed.
Flamini will become the second free transfer of the summer after Yaya Sanogo and as some of our regulars note, given the Frenchman claimed he had around £70 million to spend, quite why he persists on bringing in players who cost nothing and are simply not the marquee players the club needs, remains to be seen.
Since leaving the Gunners five years ago, Flamini has suffered with significant injury issues and was ruled out of the entire 2011/12 Serie A campaign leading to even more questions over his fitness and ability to play the amount of games required at the top level.
