Arsenal and Liverpool set for Spanish striker disappointment

Disappointed sighs filled the smoking area in the Football Transfer Tavern after news filtered through that Athletic Bilbao coach Marcelo Biesla had confirmed Spanish international striker Fernando Llorente would not be leaving in January.

Llorente had interested a whole host of Premier League sides after stating he would leave the La Liga side when his contract expires next summer. However it now appears that his club are willing to take a loss on his services and will let him leave for free in June instead of letting him leave during the imminent transfer window.

The Spanish international has only started one game for the La Liga strugglers after declaring he wouldn’t sign a new contract which led to Bilbao fans venting their anger at the decision.

However Biesla told Sky Sports: “Llorente is an important player in this club and we need his presence this season,”

“The club have decided that he follows with us until June, and that is good for the squad.”

The news is a blow for both Arsenal and Liverpool who were hopeful of signing the clinical striker in January as Brendan Rodgers and Arsene Wenger each look to solve their own woes in front of goal.

Will we see the brilliant Spaniard gracing the Premier League anytime soon? Vote on our polls below.
