Ligue 1 side Bordeaux are ready to raid Arsenal for the second time this season as they eye up a move for midfielder Mohamed Elneny, according to Foot Mercato (via Sports Mole).
Bordeaux signed former Arsenal captain Laurent Koscielny for €5m (roughly £4.6m) earlier in the transfer window.
It is being reported by the French publication that Bordeaux were targeting Monaco’s Youssef Ait-Bennasser; however, a move is proving difficult and the side have since made Elneny their primary target.
Bordeaux finished 14th last season, and have started this season in mixed fashion winning, losing and drawing each of their first three games.
A move away for Elneny seems inevitable after a difficult 2018/19 campaign. The Egypt international made just 17 appearances in all competitions (via Transfermarkt), as he played back-up to regular starters Lucas Torreira, Granit Xhaka and Matteo Guendouzi.
Elneny’s statistics from last season hardly does the midfielder any favours when attempting to argue whether he should remain at the Emirates this season. Across the Europa League and Premier League, Elneny averaged more than one in just two defensive categories, tackles and clearances made per games, both in Europe’s second-tier competition (via WhoScored).
And his attacking contribution was even worse, as Elneny assisted just one goal in the Europa League, the joint-lowest attacking contribution of any of Arsenal’s central midfielder’s last term (via WhoScored).
Guendouzi’s start to the season and the emergence of youth star Joe Willock will only further reduce the chances of the 27-year-old. Guendouzi is averaging the most passes in the centre of the north London side’s midfield so far, while Willock is averaging the joint-second most dribbles per game (via WhoScored).
A move away from north London seems to be on the cards this summer; it’s hard to see Elneny remaining, especially with Arsenal keen to clear out some of the wages at the club.
