Arsenal boss confirms first-team ace may leave in January

Debuchy.jpgArsenal fans around the Transfer Tavern celebrating the fact that they sit top of the Premier League heading into the New Year have seen the discussions quickly alter, amid confirmation that a first-team ace could be lost.

Metro quotes Arsene Wenger as admitting that Mathieu Debuchy could leave the club in January, with the French defender looking for regular first-team football to improve his chances of making France’s European Championship squad.

Debuchy struggled with injuries during the first year of his time in North London, which coincided with the meteoric rise of Hector Bellerin. That’s left first-team football rare for Debuchy, with Bellerin having established himself as the first-choice right-back.

When asked by the press if Debuchy could leave in January, Wenger responded by stating:

‘It’s not impossible, I’m happy if he stays. We’ll see.’

That could lead to a potential problem for Arsenal as Bellerin would face no competition for his spot, whilst Arsenal would have no back-up for the Spaniard. Calum Chambers is capable of playing in that defensive spot but has shone in defensive midfield, where Wenger sees the youngsters future.

With Carl Jenkinson on-loan at West Ham until the end of the season, our Arsenal punters believe Debuchy should stay until the summer.
