Arsenal boss makes decision on Arteta captain successor

CechAFCArsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are nervous yet optimistic heading into the crucial stages of the season, although their conversations today have orientated around the long-term future of the club.

The Daily Mirror says Arsene Wenger has made his decision on who the next Arsenal captain should be, with Mikel Arteta’s contract expiring this summer, and it’s stated he’s chosen last summer’s arrival Petr Cech as the man to take the armband.

It’s split the fans at the bar, who don’t agree that a 33-year-old or a goalkeeper should wear the armband and they’ve argued that there’s better candidates out there, including current vice captain Per Mertesacker and his defensive partner Laurent Koscielny.

Reports state the decision as Cech over Mertesacker has been made because the German is no longer a guaranteed starter, whilst Cech brings a wealth of experience to the role after 12 years in English football.

Our landlord isn’t a fan of goalkeepers as captain and would prefer a midfielder or defender to take the role, stating that Arsenal have plenty of candidates.
