Arsenal fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are getting increasingly frustrated with this summer’s transfer window.
After yesterday’s reports that long-term striking target Luis Suarez could be set to stay at Liverpool there is more bad news for Gunners supporters in the tavern.
Today The Guardian reports that the Gunners are set to be beaten by Wolfsburg for Luiz Gustavo’s signing with reports in Germany suggesting that the Bundesliga club have agreed a £17 million deal for the Bayern Munich defensive midfielder.
Arsene Wenger had targeted the 26-year-old Brazilian as the eventual replacement for Alex Song, who left for Barcelona last summer, as the French boss looks to plug a key area of weakness in his Arsenal side.
However Wenger was only willing to go to around £14 million and that has allowed Wolfsburg to steal a march on the Premier League side as the Gunners look set on miss out on yet another summer target.
Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Lars Bender has already rejected the Gunners while new Tottenham signing Etienne Capoue was also understood to be on Wenger’s radar this summer.
With the season kicking off at the weekend and only a few weeks left of the summer transfer window, Wenger is under mounting pressure to make a marquee signing and add to the squad that finished in fourth last season.
Arsenal have only signed young French striker Yaya Sanogo despite reportedly having a £70 million transfer budget to spend.
