We at the Football Transfer Tavern are hoping that Wayne Rooney stays in the Premier League so if that means he joins Arsenal then so be it.
Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis has confirmed that the Gunners have a vastly improved transfer kitty to play with this summer and that they can afford to bring Rooney to North London.
After previous summers of selling his best players, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger knows that he needs a at least one big name signings if Arsenal are to challenge for the title again with other clubs around them adding new players to their squads.
Rooney handed in a transfer request at Old Trafford towards the end of last season and is set for crunch talks with new boss David Moyes in the coming weeks.
The Gunners are the favourites to sign the England striker if he becomes available.
“I don’t know what his fee would be,” Gazidis told The Sun.
“I’m talking about an extra £70m of additional, high-margin revenue — so of course we could do that. We could do more than that.
“We are beginning to see the escalation in our financial firepower. That’s going to happen partly next season, it’s partly available now. It means we can spend more on transfers and wages.
“We can look at options that weren’t previously in our financial capability.”
The Gunners are talking the talk but will they walk the walk with a Rooney bid? Let us know your thoughts below.
