There are confused faces here in the Football Transfer Tavern as it is claimed by Metro that Arsenal and Chelsea could well be set to miss out on Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain.
The Argentine forward looked certain to leave Los Blancos at the end of last season and was fairly vocal about his desire to get out of the Spanish capital and play somewhere where he felt starting chances would be offered on a far more frequent basis.
With Arsenal having been linked with the player all summer, a deal doesn’t look as likely as it did a few weeks ago.
After the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti at Real, the move stalled somewhat and now the asking price for the player nicknamed Pipita is around £40 million – nearly double what the club originally valued the forward at.
It seems that Ancelotti wants to keep the forward at the club and now Higuain’s agent has noted to Radio ORC that: “Carlo Ancelotti will do everything possible to convince Higuain to stay put.”
He further addressed claims Higuain could move to Napoli and claimed: “Could he join Napoli? I think that’s out of the question too – I don’t think that they will be able to sign him.”
This has of course left Arsene Wenger reeling and looking around at other targets – Luis Suarez being the main one and given Higuain claimed that Jose Mourinho also wanted to bring him to Chelsea, that also brings into doubt Mourinho claiming Rooney was his only target of the summer.
