Arsenal close to agreeing £25m deal to snap up in-demand defender

The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are wondering if any more business will be done in the January transfer window. They have completed the signing of Konstantinos Mavropanos from PAS Giannina but he is not quite ready for the first team yet. The fans here in the Transfer Tavern want to sign a first team ready player.

And their wish could be granted, according to reports emerging today. According to an exclusive report by The Sun, Arsenal are close to agreeing a fee of £25m for West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans.

Jonny Evans is a man in demand at the moment, having been chased by a number of clubs – including Arsenal and Manchester City – in the summer transfer window. West Brom face a battle to keep the former Man United man at the club this January and they now seem resigned to selling him with a fee of £25m expected to be accepted by the West Midlands outfit.

Arsenal now look set to fend off their competitors and land the Northern Ireland international to bolster their defensive options. The 30-year-old will be competing with Laurent Koscielny, Rob Holding, Shkodran Mustafi and Per Mertesacker if he finalises his move.

Landlord’s verdict

Jonny Evans is a very good centre half at Premier League level and he has proven this over many years. At £25m, Arsenal are getting a solid defender to shore things up at the back and he still has several years left in him. This could prove to be a very shrewd piece of business which reaps immediate rewards for the Gunners.
