Arsenal supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern are still waiting for news on the pursuit of Liverpool striker Luis Suarez but it now appears that manager Arsene Wenger has diverted his attention into solidifying his midfield in the meantime.
The latest reports come from Metro who suggest that the Gunners are close to agreeing a £14 million deal to bring Bayern Munich star Luiz Gusatvo to the Emirates Stadium.
The 26-year-old Brazilian international has also been linked with a move to Premier League rivals Chelsea and Bundesliga side Wolfsburg but Wenger is understood to have fended off competition to land the versatile midfielder.
Gustavo has been told he can leave the Allianz Arena by new Bayern coach Pep Guardiola after the arrival of Barcelona starlet Thiago Alcantara and that had alerted Arsenal to his summer availability.
When the French boss was quizzed about the potential transfer yesterday, he said: “It’s as you say.”
However, suggestions that the deal for the Brazilian was completed was denied by the Arsenal manager, who said: “There is nothing concrete yet.”
The holding midfielder, who can also capably slot in at centre back, would offer more options to Wenger ahead of a highly competitive Premier League season as he looks to add more defensive minded options.
Mikel Arteta did well for the Gunners playing the holding role in front of the back four last season but the 31-year-old would be better suited in a more attacking role and the arrival of Gustavo at the Emirates would give the club an midfield anchor they have missed since the departure of Alex Song to Barcelona last summer.
