Arsenal fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are enjoying the action in the Emirates Cup today as the new season slowly comes into view but with no real ready-made signings at the club.
Discussion among the supporters has now turned to the next summer arrival at the North London club with Metro reporting that the Gunners are closing in on a deal to sign young German midfielder Matthias Ginter from Bundesliga side Freiburg for around £6 million.
The 19-year-old highly rated star, who has won three caps at Under-21 level, is considered one of the finest young prospects in Germany and made 26 appearances for his side as they secured an impressive fifth place
As one Gunner in the bar points out this possible recruitment seems a solid piece of business with the club clearly failing to replace Barcelona star Alex Song who departed last summer.
Ginter may be one for the future but he could still play a part in the Arsene Wenger’s first time for the new season given their lack of steel in the centre of the park. Mikel Arteta was a suitable makeshift defensive midfielder last term but the club certainly could do with an extra body in their midfield ahead of the new campaign.
