Arsenal fans are rather enjoying life in the Football Transfer Tavern as their side sit pretty at the top of the Premier League. French marksman Olivier Giroud found the target twice during their 2-0 victory over Southampton on Saturday to increase their lead to four points.
Despite his brilliant form, there are still major concerns from Gunners supporters in the bar that another striker will be required to secure the title for Arsene Wenger’s side this season.
Now today’s Metro reports that Arsenal are preparing to step up their interest in Romanian international striker Ciprian Marica as they look to fend off competition from Tottenham.
Last week it was reported in the tavern that Spurs were also looking at the 28-year-old as they attempt to add more firepower in January. Summer signing Roberto Soldado has only found the net four times and the Lilywhites were left embarrassed by yesterday’s abject showing at Manchester City.
Despite this supposed interest from White Hart Lane, it now appears that the Gunners have crept into pole position to sign the Getafe forward, who signed as a free agent towards the end of the summer.
The former Schalke, Stuttgart and Shakhtar Donetsk striker is viewed as a cheap alternative to Real Madrid marksman Karim Benzema and Aston Villa attacker Christian Benteke by Wenger but there are no guarantees he will try to sign a striker in January,
In fact, the French boss recently admitted that after Theo Walcott made his return from injury on Saturday and with Lukas Podolski is also nearly at full fitness again, he may keep the same squad in his attempt to bring silverware to the club for the first time in eight years.
Another point that one punter in the bar has made, is why would Arsenal now pay money for a player they could have signed for free at the end of September?
